A native of Saxony, Schreier remained in Dresden throughout his life, not wishing to leave the DDR, the former communist East Germany. He nevertheless maintained an international career, appearing regularly at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg festival, the Metropolitan Opera and in London.
