Pestering charities will face £25,000 fines

Charities that persistently ask donors for money against their will could be fined up to £25,000 under new rules. A Fundraising Preference Service (FPS), which will impose strong restrictions on communication tactics used by charities, is to be introduced by the Fundraising Regulator this week. Lord Grade of Yarmouth, chairman of the regulator, said that charities had to take it upon themselves to restore public trust. From Thursday, donors will be able to stop targeted emails, telephone calls, text messages and post from specific charities by entering their details on the FPS website. The charities will have to halt all contact with the complainant within 28 days.
