An Australian researcher in Antarctica formed an unusual friendship with an inquisitive emperor penguin which followed him across the ice. Smudge slides on his belly to catch up with Australian researcher Matthew Williams and the rest of his team. Williams has been stationed in Antarctica since February and part of his job is to monitor emperor penguin rookeries. Emperor penguins are the largest penguin breed and grow to an average height of 45 inches. During breeding, male emperor penguins keep their eggs balanced on their feet, using their feathers to keep it warm.
