His film about the Christchurch chicken club, Pecking Order, began three years ago when, at a craft fair in Melbourne, he got chatting to women selling organic chicken feed. Returning to New Zealand, he discovered that the nation's oldest poultry club just happened to be in Christchurch. "Stewards go around cracking eggs so people can't steal an egg from a top bird," Martinov says. The Christchurch filmmaker admits he knew "chicken shit" about the competitive world of show chickens three years ago but now he looks at the birds differently.
