Party-list system: a good idea gone badPresident Rodrigo Duterte wants the party-list system scrapped, saying it has been abused. Under the party-list system, a voter casts his vote for a party-list organization rather than for an individual candidate. Indeed, the party-list system is a mechanism that is necessary to keep the democratic flame burning, but our experience in the past years provides proof that it has gone bad. As Duterte said, the rich and the powerful have made a mockery of the law on the party-list system. But recent experiences have shown us that the established political parties have – as Senator Panfilo Lacson described it –bastardized the party-list system.
