Partnership targets carbon market for clean cooking investment

An African fund and a clean cooking organisation are looking to drive investments in this sector across the continent. The Clean Cooking Alliance (CCA) points out that an estimated 2.4 billion people worldwide rely on polluting open fires and inefficient stoves for cooking. “However, current levels of investment in clean cooking – estimated at around $130 million each year – fall far short of the $10 billion needed to reach universal access.”The CCA said previously that the sector has historically received insufficient investment from public and private sources. “As such, the carbon market, with its large funding flows and rapid growth, could provide the financial resources necessary to rapidly expand clean cooking access. “The international community now has more and significantly better data specific to clean cooking.
