OTTAWA – A government appointed panel is recommending streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon be mandated to contribute to creating Canadian content, while also arguing for the end of advertising on the CBC. The panel appointed in June 2018 released 97 recommendations calling for a wholesale overhaul of the broadcasting and telecommunications industry. Among the changes are calls to have Netflix and other streaming giants mandate to create Canadian content for their platforms and ensure that Canadians can find it easily. The panel’s call for an end to CBC’s advertising dollars was accompanied by a call for more stable funding, with the government making five year commitments in funding. Yale said eliminating the advertising dollars would also free the CBC to take more risks and worry less about the commercial success of its programming.
