If PETA has its way, Punxsutawney Phil will soon be unemployed. But with Groundhog Day this Sunday, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling upon Phil’s handlers at the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to kibosh this annual tradition and set him free. According to an FAQ on the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club website, Phil lives in a “climate-controlled” burrow with consistent lighting and cleaning services. If anything, we should be expanding Groundhog Day to other species more attuned to Earth than we are. Besides, you can’t just fire Punxsutawney Phil and expect him to survive on his own.
