Palmerston North exhibition shares stories of tradition and whakapapa

Māori artists are sharing stories of family and the Treaty of Waitangi in a Palmerston North exhibition. Jude Te Punga Nelson wove a cloak that is mounted on top of stories detailing events that occurred between Māori and pākehā. It was inspired by Māori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi, who said: “Do not cover the Treaty of Waitangi with the Union Jack. She stripped harakeke with a mussel shell, which leaves the fibres or muka that is used to weave the cloak. Trina Heke wove a cloak for the exhibition that represents the restoration of tradition.
