THE Philippines and the United States vowed to prioritize the fight against human trafficking under the bilateral Child Protection Compact (CPC) partnership forged between the two countries in April this year. TIP in its report released in June 2017 said the Philippines was able to comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of international human trafficking thus retained its Tier 1 ranking. It also acknowledged the efforts of the Philippine government in going after traffickers, preventing trafficking, and identifying and assisting victims of trafficking. A Tier 1 ranking indicates that a government has acknowledged the existence of human trafficking, made efforts to address the problem, and complied with the minimum standards of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. However, it doesn’t mean that a country given such a ranking has no human trafficking problem.
