The wreckage of burnt-out speedboats still litters the beach at Chalong bay in Phuket on Monday, a month after a fire destroyed 24 boats on Jan 3. The affected boat operators gathered at the provincial office in Muang district on Monday demanding clarity, but were simply told to “wait for forensic results”. Both local residents and boat operators questioned why an issue that impacts people’s lives, tourism and the environment remained stagnant. He said a meeting had been scheduled with appropriate agencies for boat operators to present their information and to resolve their complaints. The clean up of the remaining wreckage, about four boats, should be completed within a week, Mr Ekadul said.
