The incident happened on State Highway 1 between Auckland and Waikato. Hamill didn't think much of this piece of driving and sped up to place himself six metres in front of the larger vehicle. When the intimidation tactic didn't work and the truck driver didn't slow down, Hamill took his foot off the accelerator closing the distance between the two vehicles. He coasted along until the rear end of his ute collided with the front of the larger truck. The Volvo truck driver told police he was carrying a heavy load and couldn't brake to avoid the collision.
