The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) seized over 600 illegally modified vehicles in the district last year. However, Motor Vehicle Inspector Eldo Varghese says the fine imposed on the offenders under the Motor Vehicles Act is very low. But people spend even upto ₹1 lakh for modifying vehicles. Even the size and the font of number plates are changed from the standard form. “We had spoken to people at workshops where number plates are made, but most of them say that customers were willing to pay fine for fancy number plates,” he adds.
