India’s tourism minister has come under fire after advising female tourists not to wear skirts or go out alone at night in small towns. The reported comments by Mahesh Sharma came under questioning from the press in Agra on Sunday. “We give welcome kits to tourists when they land at the airport,” Sharma reportedly said to The Indian Express. “The kit includes a card with do’s and don’ts such as, do not venture out alone at night in small towns, do not wear skirts…”Sharma also advised women visiting the country to photograph the license plate of any vehicles they travel in and to send those photos to friends. “Indian culture is different from the western,” Sharma reportedly said.
