OTTAWA—The federal government is moving to freeze the sale of handguns in Canada as part of its latest effort to reform the country’s gun laws. “In other words, we’re capping the market for handguns,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday while announcing the new measures. But the end of the sale of handguns to almost all Canadians is a marked departure from the last bill. In the information accompanying the release of the bill, the government said the freeze could be implemented by fall 2022. Handguns were also involved in 54 per cent of sexual offences and 51 per cent of firearm-specific violent offences.
