Otago pupils will be among the medal contenders as the country’s best school athletes converge on Hastings this week­end. East leads the way in the junior boys 400m field, having run an impressive 51.18sec two weekends ago. Otago Boys’ High School has 11 athletes travelling and has a defending champion in Anton Schroeder, who won last year’s senior boys javelin. Tara McNally looks to be among the favourites in both the junior girls 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles. Tokomairiro Area School’s Ethan Walker won the junior boys javelin by 6m last year and will bea firm favourite.
