About one million people have been marooned by the monsoon flood that is sweeping over several northern districts over the last few days. In Gaibandha Sadar upazila, seven-year-old Swapna Khatun drowned in the floodwater at Kamarjani village under Sadar upazila on Wednesday. More than 200,000 people have been marooned in seven upazilas of the district while at total of 221 education institutions shut down. Education activities in more than 150 education institutions have come to a halt due to the flooding. Laily Begum, 28, from Shakhahati village under Chilmari upazila, and Hamidul Haque, 17, from Halokhana village under Sadar upazila, drowned in the floodwater Wednesday.
