At least 223 candidates won the election unopposed including 112 chairmen, 52 vice-chairmen and 59 female vice-chairmen. The independent candidates have been elected uncontested to all three posts in the fourth phase of elections in 15 Upazilas, said Atiar Rahman, deputy secretary at the EC. This is the first time Upazila elections, boycotted by the BNP, are being held on party lines. As many as 12 candidates were elected uncontested in the polls. Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar has questioned hundreds of candidates being elected uncontested, saying how can it be called an election if it is not contested?
