Earlier this week, the former prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, expressed optimism about meeting the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi, in the near future. It was during Sharif’s tenure that the former Indian prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, took a bus to Lahore in 1999, a move that was later sabotaged by Pervez Musharraf. The abrogation of Article 370 is the primary bone of contention between the two neighbours now. It is time for the Modi regime to come off its hawkish high horse and build bridges in the region.
