Olympic medallist inspires young girls in Saskatoon

Leading Sunday's Play Like a Girl event in Saskatoon are a few Olympic athletes including women's bobsleigh silver medallist Helen Upperton, Parapan Am Games bronze medallist Jessica Frotten and junior national fencer Kirsten Van Marion. Speaking to CBC Radio's Saskatchewan Weekend host Shauna Powers, Upperton explained how difficult her journey to the Canadian Olympic team was, adding it made her much stronger today and she wants to inspire the same strength in others. Coming from a strong track and field background, Upperton competed for the University of Texas and after graduation she returned to Toronto where she got a phone call from a Canadian Olympic team recruiter. Canadian brakewoman Jennifer Cionetti, left, and pilot Helen Upperton celebrate their World Cup bobsleigh victory in Winterberg, Germany. Over the course of her 10-year bobsleigh career, Helen Upperton accumulated more than 20 international World Cup medals and is considered a trailblazer in her sport.
