Solskjaer is understood to be in pole position because of his impressive run of results — but also because other runners and riders are falling away. The United hierarchy are fearful they may not be able to lure Mauricio Pochettino, their original No1 target, away from Premier League rivals Tottenham. Solskjaer is still only in temporary charge until the summer as things stand, with an £8m fee already agreed between United and his club Molde should he get the Old Trafford job permanently.
