Off-duty cop to rescue after car plunge

Last Saturday, a car and trailer descended into the Waikato River about 12.25pm, at the intersection of Tirau Rd and Shakespeare St in Cambridge. While in the car, Quate saw a vehicle with two people inside go through the barrier at Ferguson Bridge on the outskirts of town, diving down a bank into the river. The off-duty cop scrambled down the slope and stepped into "freezing water", quickly finding himself out of his depth. It was the second time he had performed CPR in his 18-year career - both times he was off-duty. The man, who was driving their car, was also taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
