Judge Roberts said the victim, in a victim impact statement, complained about the cuts she received which required her to be taken to Dunedin Hospital for surgery. Leading up to the confrontation, in a three-way text exchange, Kelly wrote to her victim: "Want to give me a hiding? Kelly arrived at the property and "after a short verbal exchange, you produced a knife", Judge Roberts said.
