Nurses vote to go on strike

Photo: Getty ImagesAn eight-hour nurses’ strike will go ahead on Wednesday, affecting all public hospitals and district health board facilities around New Zealand. The New Zealand Nurses Union has “overwhelmingly” rejected a second DHB offer in multi-employer collective agreement (MECA) negotiations. Nurses had already confirmed they would stop work in mid-May, which the New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) union said would have given staff a 1.38% wage increase. That led to a last-minute revised pay offer from the DHBs. “That staff levels are regularly below life preserving services levels should concern everyone,” he said.
