Green power generation in Bangladesh got a facelift following the first shipment of nuclear fuel for Unit-1 of Bangladesh’s maiden 2,400 megawatt (MW) Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) arriving in Dhaka recently. This uranium was produced at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant (NCCP) in Russia, a subsidiary of Rosatom’s fuel manufacturing company TVEL. Special security arrangements, involving the Bangladesh Army and law enforcement officers, have been put in place to ensure the safe transportation of the nuclear fuel. Bangladesh is currently in the process of implementing its first-ever nuclear power generation infrastructure, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant located in Ishwardi upazila in Pabna. The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) had signed a contract with Russia’s state-run uranium mining and nuclear fuel production company TVEL in August 2019 for the import of nuclear fuel for the plant.
