Ms. Arslett went to her first Northern Soul party in 1982 when she was 18, after a stranger invited her while she was browsing records at a market stall in Oxford. “You go and you’re terrified,” she said. “Everybody is doing the same dance and it looks really difficult. I went for ages and studied it and asked people to teach me and they would say no.”She strives to be more hands-on at the Bristol Northern Soul Club’s parties, approaching people to talk to them or teach them basic steps.
