NESO is a political organization comprising all student bodies of India’s Northeast. The decision to observe a strike across the entire Northeast comes in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to go ahead with the Citizenship Bill while addressing a poll rally in Assam’s Silchar on January 4. “The government is moving ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was introduced to India’s lower house in July, 2016 by the Narendra Modi-led BJP government. The students’ body also appealed to the people of entire Northeast India to cooperate with the strike as the region is not a dumping ground for illegal immigrants.
