SEOUL—A North Korean soldier apparently defected to the South on Monday, only to be shot by his comrades as he crossed the border at the most sensitive area of the heavily armed demilitarized zone that divides the Korean Peninsula. The North Korean soldier, who tried to cross over at the Joint Security Area, where troops from North and South Korea stand face to face, was shot in the shoulder and elbow, according to a spokesman for South Korea’s Defense Ministry.
