In a special announcement on state television, North Korea said it launched a Hwasong-14 missile that flew about 579 miles, reaching an altitude of 1,741 miles. Melissa Hanham, a North Korea expert at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, called Tuesday’s test a “huge milestone” for North Korea. Hanham said North Korea is not known to have tested components necessary for such a hit, but may do so in the future. Many believe North Korea already has weapons that could hit East Asia, including U.S. bases in the region. Unsurprisingly, in North Korea, the launch was indeed hailed as a historic triumph.
