KUALA LUMPUR: The first regional risk assessment of non-profit organisations (NPOs) in eight Asia-Pacific nations has identified a ‘medium risk’ of terrorism financing. The risk assessment, launched at the Counter-Terrorism Financing Summit here at Sasana Kijang today, has prompted regional authorities to improve data collection and sharing to identify, monitor and disrupt high-risk NPOs while making it harder for terrorists to infiltrate NPO finances. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi lauded the move and praised the working groups behind its success. “The risk assessment recommended that countries should actively target the small sub-set of NPOs most vulnerable to terrorism financing. We have a joint responsibility to help those organisations protect themselves from criminal abuse and terrorism financing,” said Zahid, who is also Home Minister.
