NEW DELHI: In its bid to see that state governments implement the rural drinking water supply programme with greater focus on "sustainability and functionality", the Cabinet on Friday approved the restructuring of National Rural Drinking Water Programme NRDWP ). The Cabinet approved Rs 23,000 crore for the rural drinking water programme till 2019-20. "The programme will cover all the rural population across the country. The restructuring will make the programme flexible, result-oriented, competitive, and will enable the ministry to reach the goal of increasing the coverage of sustainable piped water supply," a government release said.There will be 2 per cent earmarking of funds for Japanese Encephalitis/Acute Encephalitis-affected areas. The programme will have greater focus on areas hit by arsenic, fluoride iron, nitrate and salinity.
