No optimum age for starting school, University of Canterbury research says

No optimum age for starting school, University of Canterbury research saysAge makes little difference in achievement for children in their first year of primary school, a University of Canterbury study has found. The age children start school makes little difference to their academic achievement a year on, a study has found. JOHN KIRK-ANDERSON/FAIRFAX NZ Dr John Boereboom says parents shouldn't get "hung up" on the idea starting school younger could be beneficial. International research on the effects of school starting age on student outcomes is inconclusive. The study said there was no reason to support a "nationally-mandated optimum age for starting school" because some children would benefit from starting school later, some could benefit from doing their first year part time, and for others, starting school too soon could be detrimental.
