Many of the children were in a bad way when left at the orphanage NIGEL MORTONAfter 22 years of devoted care, the orphanage has had to close its doors. “Every day we say no,” Erika Spillmann said as she sat in the playground of Bambi House, one of the largest private orphanages in Venezuela. The home is overwhelmed with pleas from parents — and even the socialist government — to take in more children. All of the 125 beds the organisation has in four properties across Caracas are occupied. The flood of children needing the help of organisations such as the Bambi orphanage is a consequence of the country’s collapsing economy and soaring poverty.
