Child labour is a serious violation of children’s rights, and despite decades of improvement, it is on the rise again. This is reversing previous downward trend that saw child labour fall by 94 million between 2000 and 2016. The highest child labour rates, at more than 30 percent, are in the arid and semi-arid land (ASAL) counties. June 12, the World Day Against Child Labour provides an opportunity to take stock of the situation. Before the recent increase, significant strides had been made towards achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 8.7, which calls on all countries to “secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour… and by 2025, end child labour in all its forms”.
