Newcastle United and West Ham raided in HMRC tax fraud investigation

The offices of Newcastle United and West Ham United were raided on Wednesday morning as part of a wide-ranging HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigation into suspected criminal tax fraud in professional football. Newcastle’s training ground, Darsley Park, in the suburb of Benton, was also raided by the tax authorities. In its statement, HMRC also said: “180 HMRC officers have been deployed across the UK and France today. This criminal investigation sends a clear message that, whoever you are, if you commit tax fraud you can expect to face the consequences. As this is an ongoing investigation HMRC is unable to provide any further detail at this time.”
