Brexit campaign damaged press freedom, says watchdog

Reporters Without Borders said the deterioration was sharpest in democracies, citing the rise of strongmen in countries like Turkey and Russia. Media liberty is in peril or a “very serious situation” in 72 countries including India and China, the French-based group found. The number of countries where the situation was rated “good” or “fairly good” fell by more than 2 per cent. Britain, like the US, fell two places in the group’s index on press freedom and now sits at 40th.
