The creators behind a new south Waikato wetland hope the project will be an example for other farmers to follow. The one-hectare sized project at AgResearch's Tokanui dairy research farm near Kihikihi was transformed into a showcase wetland through a partnership with the Puniu River Care group, the Waikato Regional Council, and the local community. Farm operations manager Shane Dodunski​ said AgResearch retired the land where the wetland stands and provided it to Puniu River Care and the regional council. The project was an opportunity for Puniu River Care's fresh water team to showcase their capabilities, Puniu River Care spokesman Shannon Te Huia said.
