It will take some major late money to make a home America’s Cup defence possible for Team New Zealand. A new poll shows New Zealanders don’t want the America’s Cup defended at home at an increased cost to the tax payer. In contrast, 50 per cent supported the notion of Team New Zealand defending the Cup offshore without any Kiwi taxpayer money at all. They believed that had an $80m shortfall of what was required for a solid defence as they seek an America’s Cup hat-trick. Team New Zealand commissioned the latest poll to put more pointed questions to the public than the poll commissioned by Dunphy in mid-August.
