Six weeks after the suspected suicide of Olympic cyclist Olivia Podmore, the panel overseeing the independent inquiry into cycling has been confirmed. Mike Heron, the lawyer who investigated cycling in 2018, will co-chair the independent inquiry into the sport, alongside professor Sarah Leberman, a leading expert in women and leadership in sport. Podmore, 24, died in early August, following a social media post in which the 2016 Rio Olympic Games rider outlined allegations pertaining to Cycling New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand. That review will be used as a “baseline”, with the inquiry panel accessing whether recommendations have been implemented by Cycling New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand. Cycling New Zealand chief executive Jacques Landry has welcomed the appointment of Heron to the inquiry panel.
