Monday's regular Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved the draft of the 'Standards of Weights and Measures Act 2017'. Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told the media that the new law has been made after amending and revising the existing 'Standards of Weights and Measures Ordinance 1982' upon the Supreme Court's order. He said the penalty for using substandard scales and weights has been increased to Tk 20,000 from Tk 3,000. The jail term for offences, however, remains the same -- a maximum of six months, added the Cabinet secretary. More to follow
