New images show brutal reality of ‘Berlin Wall’ plan to safeguard Gwynedd resort

‌Dismissed out of hand was increasing the height of the main sea wall. Ongoing deterioration has already caused breaches, such as in 2021 when part of the north promenade failed. ‌Construction of Barmouth’s causeway in the 1970s seeded new dunes, which are now growing exponentially as sand is blown south from north Barmouth beach. To prevent undermining of the main sea wall, the preferred alternative is a 1.2km-long rock revetment to absorb wave energy and reduce erosion.
