A Toronto hospital’s new hip-replacement technique is allowing some patients to leave hospital the day of the operation. A surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital says the approach signifies a new “ideology” for the surgery. “People used to think of hip replacements or knee replacements and you were in the hospital for four to five days,” he said. “But now we’re saying you’re safe enough to go home.”Physiotherapist Ellen Newbold, centre, helps Tim Heenan walk as he prepares for his release following day surgery. “So it does help with the rapid recovery.” However, this form of surgery isn’t applicable for every patient, he said.
