After the Pigeon Valley wildfires, the Appleby Volunteer Fire Brigade almost doubled in size. Volunteer firefighter Bella Clark-Melchers said before the 2019 fires the brigade had 12 volunteers and now they have 20. Ted Ford is a founding member of the Appleby Volunteer Fire Brigrade and is still part of the team. The new Appleby Volunteer Fire Station site will be built at the intersection of the Moutere Highway and Redwood Road.
