New activity on the Western Sahara conflict, but no one knows where this is headedThe North Africa Journal – March 6, 2017 – The UN envoy to the Western Sahara Christopher Ross has handed over his resignation to the new UN chief Antonio Guterres. But there is certainly traction on the Western Sahara dossier. First to Rabat, then to Tindouf, on the Algerian territory, which is home of thousands of Western Sahara refugees who are under UN protection. So far the latter sees the Western Sahara as too little of a problem to consider it worth spending diplomatic capital. James Baker was the UN’s point man on the Western Sahara in 2004, and just like Christopher Ross, he had major disagreements with Morocco.
