Morocco top producer of cannabis, becoming transit route for South American cocaineThe North Africa Journal – March 6, 2017 – Morocco produces a lot of cannabis and that’s a huge part of the country’s economy, feeding tens of thousands of farmers in the northern province. Yet Morocco has become a transit point of cocaine originating from South America, and headed to Europe. This is no surprise because the cocaine traffickers are likely using the same dense networks used by cannabis traffickers to move their products east and north. The US State Department issued its annual report on drug production and trafficking, confirming Morocco’s position as the world’s number one producer and exporter of cannabis. These were the two largest cocaine seizures ever recorded in Morocco estimates.
