Smoking kills about 5,000 people a year in New Zealand, making it one of the country's top causes of preventable death. "Cigarette smoking kills 14 New Zealanders every day and two out of three smokers will die as a result of smoking," said New Zealand Medical Association chair Alistair Humphrey in a statement. The Taoiseach said he would closely study the New Zealand plan, describing it as potentially very clever. He said the Government would learn more about the New Zealand move to see "does it have application here?" "There should be no barrier put in the way of preventing young people from ever taking up cigarettes," Mr Martin added.
