Young people in New Zealand are set to become one of the first smoke-free generations in the world amid plans to ban them for life from buying tobacco products. In one of the world’s toughest crackdowns on smoking, New Zealand is seeking to make the sale of tobacco products to anyone who is under 14 in 2023 an offence. New Zealand’s Smokefree 2025 action plan would be the second-strictest in the world after Bhutan banned the sale of cigarettes outright. There would then be a focus on reducing the addictiveness and supply of tobacco products. “Cigarette smoking kills 14 New Zealanders every day and two out of three smokers will die as a result of smoking,” said New Zealand Medical Association chair Alistair Humphrey.
