New South Wales to ban greyhound racing from next year after live-baiting scandal

Victoria, South Australia and Queensland have responded by saying greyhound racing will not be banned in their states. Last year, the Victorian government announced a suite of new measures to crack down on the greyhound racing industry following an investigation by the racing integrity commissioner. The Australian Capital Territory chief minister, Andrew Barr, said his government could not continue to support the greyhound racing industry following the NSW decision. The Queensland government said its greyhound industry should not be shut down because it was “capable of reform”. New South Wales will become the first Australian state to ban greyhound racing, the premier Mike Baird announced on Thursday, following an investigation which found systemic industry animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting.
