After much fanfare, the first of a five-series Univision and Netflix co-production deal is finally here. Tijuana, a political thriller about the assassination of a gubernatorial candidate and a group of Mexican reporters who risk their lives to uncover a conspiracy behind the crime, has a premiere date on Netflix. According to the Committe to Protect Journalists, 30 journalists have been murdered in Mexico since 2009. When the companies announced production of Tijuana in February 2018, the series was supposed to air on Univision prior to streaming on Netflix. That was the same formula for their successful first co-production of El Chapo, which led to the five-series deal.
