Nelson-Tasman's sewerage 'alarm bells' being addressed

An aerial photograph of the Bell Island Wastewater Treatment Plant near Rabbit Island. The alarm bells over Nelson-Tasman’s sewerage infrastructure fail safes have been ringing less loudly after a range of actions were put into place in the past year. At a Nelson City Council infrastructure committee meeting last Thursday, councillors received the Nelson Regional Sewerage Business Unit's (NRSBU) Annual Report for 2020/2021. “We’re expecting many of our big alarm bell issues will have disappeared in two years’ time.”Councillor Mel Courtney asked whether the state of the pipeline between Monaco and Bell Island was also a concern. While he was “absolutely confident” in the 2012 pipe, work was being done to investigate the concrete pipeline (which was supposed to have been reviewed in 2014).
